The Firefly Wedding manga, which began serialization on Shogakukan’s Ura Sunday manga website and MangaONE app in January 2023, has captivated readers with its unique blend of historical romance and suspense. The series reached its ninth compiled book volume as of September 2025.
The story, set in Japan’s Meiji era, follows Satoko, a noblewoman afflicted with a heart condition, who seeks a politically advantageous marriage before her health declines. Her plans are dramatically derailed when she becomes the target of a mysterious assassin named Shinpei. In a desperate bid for survival, Satoko proposes marriage to her would-be killer, only to discover Shinpei’s intense and unwavering devotion. The series explores the complex and dangerous relationship that blossoms from this unconventional arrangement.

Firefly Wedding has garnered significant attention both in Japan and internationally. It was nominated in the Best Shōjo Manga category of Kodansha’s 48th annual Manga Awards in 2024 and won the grand prize at NTT Solmare’s “Minna ga Erabu!! Denshi Comic Taishō 2024” competition. The series also ranked first in the Nationwide Bookstore Employees’ Recommended Comics list of 2024 and was ranked third in AnimeJapan’s “Manga We Want to See Animated” poll in 2025.
