SkySet Entertainment is set to release a remastered Blu-ray edition of Osamu Tezuka’s 1983 anime special, A Time Slip of 10000 Years: Prime Rose, featuring an all-new English dub. This marks the first time the anime will be officially available in North America with an English dub, offering a fresh experience for fans of classic anime and newcomers alike. The release is scheduled for June 14th.

Story and Setting

A Time Slip of 10000 Years: Prime Rose tells a unique story that blends science fiction with sword and sorcery elements. In 1983, a mysterious object known as the “Death Mask” falls from orbit, resulting in Kujukuri City in Japan and Dallas, Texas, being flung 10,000 years into the future. This future world is a desolate battleground where the remnants of these cities struggle for survival.

According to ANN, the plot revolves around a devil named Bazusu who sends two cities, Kujukuri City in Chiba Prefecture and Dallas in the U.S., to ten thousand years ahead in the future to watch them fight. Gai Tanbara, a member of the Time Patrol, fights this devil to stop the atrocity.

Synopsis

As SkySet Entertainment describes, the anime’s story:

A powerful entity known as Death Mask hurls Kujukuri City, Japan, and Dallas, Texas, 10,000 years into the future, reshaping them into a ruthless battleground where only the strongest survive. Determined to shatter this tyrant’s hold on time itself, Gai Tanbara ventures into the dystopian future. Along the way, he meets Emiya, a fierce warrior fighting to reclaim her city from the darkness. Together, they confront the horrors of a shattered world and the sinister forces threatening the fate of humanity!

Characters

  • Emiya Tachi/Prime Rose: A fierce warrior fighting to reclaim her city. Initially presented as a damsel in distress, she evolves into a strong and determined heroine.

Production History

A Time Slip of 10000 Years: Prime Rose first aired in Japan on August 21, 1983, as part of the 24-Hour Television: Love Saves the Earth charity program. The anime is based on Osamu Tezuka’s Prime Rose manga, which was serialized in Akita Publishing’s Weekly Shōnen Champion magazine from 1982 to 1983. The anime project was proposed when the manga had not yet finished, so a new synopsis was written specifically for the film.

Staff

  • Original Manga and Story line: Osamu Tezuka
  • Planning: Tsuzuki Tadahiko (Nippon Television Network Corp.)
  • Producers: Takei Hidehiko (Nippon Television Network Corp.), Dezaki Tetsu (Magic Bus), Matsutani Takayuki (Tezuka Productions Co., Ltd.)
  • Director: Dezaki Tetsu
  • Screenplay: Fujikawa Keisuke
  • Music: Ono Yuji
  • Storyboard: Ishiguro Noboru
  • Character design: Tezuka Osamu

Tezuka’s Vision

The Anime News Network reports that according to Tezuka Productions, SkySet Entertainment has acquired the license to the anime.

According to Osamu Tezuka Official, this animated TV program is unusual because it is even closer to Tezuka Osamu’s original idea than the original Manga is.

Reception and Review

A Time Slip of 10000 Years: Prime Rose has been described as a unique and imaginative work, typical of Tezuka’s style, blending wacky humor with serious drama. While some find the plot disjointed or inexplicable, others appreciate its creativity and the development of its characters.

  • THEM Anime Reviews: Notes that it starts as a sci-fi show but turns into a swords-and-sandals fantasy epic. It’s considered a time capsule that may appeal mostly to Tezuka completists and old-school fans.
  • Star Crossed Anime: Highlights the movie’s imagination and character development, particularly Prime Rose’s transformation from a damsel in distress to a feisty warrior.
  • The Spinning Image: Describes it as fast-paced and inventive with a quirky mix of humor and drama.
  • Anime News Network: notes the plot revolves around a devil named Bazusu who sends two cities, Kujukuri City in Chiba Prefecture and Dallas in the U.S., to ten thousand years ahead in the future to watch them fight.

Themes

The anime explores themes of:

  • Time travel
  • Dystopian futures
  • The battle between good and evil
  • The strength of the human spirit
  • Reclaiming one’s homeland and identity

A Must-Have for Anime Fans

With its blend of science fiction, fantasy, and historical elements, A Time Slip of 10000 Years: Prime Rose offers a unique viewing experience. The remastered Blu-ray edition with an English dub will allow a new audience to discover this classic anime special, making it a must-have for fans of Osamu Tezuka’s work and vintage anime in general.
