About Reincarnated as a Dragon Hatchling

Reincarnated as a Dragon Hatchling began as a web novel series on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō website in August 2015, penned by the author Nekoko. The story was later picked up for print publication by Taibundo Publishing (later Earth Star Entertainment) in December 2015, featuring illustrations by Naji Yanagida. In January 2021, the light novel series moved to Square Enix’s SQEX Novel imprint.

Synopsis

The series follows the story of an unnamed protagonist who finds himself reincarnated in a world filled with dangerous monsters, not as a hero or a powerful mage, but as a helpless dragon egg.

According to Seven Seas Entertainment, which publishes the English version of the light novels and the manga adaptation:

“Our hero wakes up one day in a brand new world…but his new life doesn’t come with fighting skills or magic powers, or even arms and legs! He’s reborn as a helpless egg, stuck in an unfamiliar forest surrounded by terrifying, hungry beasts. But eggs hatch, hatchlings grow up, and humble beginnings can lead to something great. He’ll do his best to become the strongest dragon ever, and no measly shell will get in his way!”

Themes and Genre

Reincarnated as a Dragon Hatchling falls under the isekai genre, where the protagonist is transported to another world. It blends elements of adventure and fantasy, focusing on the protagonist’s struggle for survival and growth in a perilous environment.

Media Mix

The Reincarnated as a Dragon Hatchling universe has expanded beyond the original light novel series, encompassing a manga adaptation and now an upcoming anime.

Manga Adaptation

A manga adaptation, illustrated by RIO, launched in Comic Earth Star in May 2017. As of January 2025, the manga has been compiled into eight volumes.

Light Novel Series

The light novel series has reached 16 volumes as of June 2022.

Where to Read

Seven Seas Entertainment licenses both the light novel series and the manga adaptation in English.

Reception

Customers have generally found the Reincarnated as a Dragon Hatchling series interesting and captivating, praising the engaging story, relatable characters, and good pacing. Some readers have compared the series favorably to “I’m a Spider, So What?”, citing the protagonist’s emotional depth and relatability.
