About Rick and Morty: The Anime

Rick and Morty: The Anime reimagines the beloved characters and themes of the original series in a Japanese anime style. The show is directed by Takashi Sano, who previously directed the animated shorts “Rick and Morty vs. Genocider” and “Summer Meets God (Rick Meets Evil).”

Storyline

The anime explores familiar themes with a fresh perspective:

  • Rick relaxing in a pseudo-world between multiverses.
  • Summer assisting Space Beth in battling the Galactic Federation.
  • Morty falling in love with an atemporal being.

Key Production Staff

  • Director & Writer: Takashi Sano (Tower of God)
  • Animation Studio: Telecom Animation Film (Lupin III, Shenmue the Animation)
  • Production: Sola Entertainment
  • Executive Producers: Jason DeMarco and Joseph Chou
  • Music Composer: Tetsuya Takahashi

Voice Cast

The series features both Japanese and English voice actors:

  • Rick: Youhei Tadano (Japanese) / Joe Daniels (English)
  • Morty: Keisuke Chiba (Japanese) / Gabriel Regojo (English)
  • Summer: Akiha Matsui (Japanese) / Donna Bella Litton (English)
  • Jerry: Manabu Muraji (Japanese) / Joe Daniels (English)
  • Beth: Takako Fuji (Japanese) / Patricia Duran (English)

Where to Watch

Prior to the physical release, Rick and Morty: The Anime was available through various streaming and digital purchase platforms.

  • Streaming: Max, Adult Swim, Adultswim Amazon Channel
  • Digital Purchase: Amazon Video, Apple TV, Fandango At Home, Microsoft Store

Reception and Reviews

Critical reception of Rick and Morty: The Anime has been mixed. Some reviewers have praised the unique visual style and the solid performances of the voice cast, while others have found the writing and humor lacking compared to the original series.

  • Some felt that the anime adaptation doesn’t fully capture the essence of what makes the original show great, pointing to difficulties in translating the original’s dark humor, nihilism, and satirical wit to a Japanese format.
  • Others appreciated the new tone, which aligns well with an anime adaptation of an unserious and humorous show, though they noted that the humor sometimes clashes with the tone.

Episode Release

The series originally premiered on Adult Swim and Max, with new episodes released weekly.

  • Adult Swim Premiere: August 15, 2024
  • Max Premiere: August 16, 2024
  • Toonami Premiere (Japanese Dub): August 17, 2024

A New Multiverse Adventure

Rick and Morty: The Anime offers a different lens through which to view the beloved characters and stories. Whether you’re a die-hard fan of the original series or an anime enthusiast, this adaptation provides a unique experience within the Rick and Morty multiverse. With the upcoming Blu-ray and DVD release, fans can soon add this chapter to their physical media collections.
