Satoru Hiura, the acclaimed manga artist best known for Hotaru’s Way, is set to launch a brand new manga series titled Binan to Kaneko (A Handsome Man and Kaneko). The manga is scheduled to debut in the May issue of Shodensha’s Feel Young magazine, hitting newsstands on May 8, 2025. This new series teases a captivating story centered around the themes of beauty and money, and how they can potentially reshape one’s future.

A Fresh Chapter for Satoru Hiura

Hiura’s upcoming manga marks an exciting new chapter in her career, following the conclusion of her recent series, Saionji-san wa Kaji o Shinai (No domestic work for Ms. Saionji), which ended in May 2024. Saionji-san wa Kaji o Shinai ran in Kodansha’s Be Love magazine from September 2021 and was compiled into five volumes. The series even inspired a live-action television drama adaptation that aired in July 2024, showcasing Hiura’s ability to create stories that resonate with a wide audience.

Hotaru’s Way: A Career Defining Work

Satoru Hiura is widely recognized for her manga series Hotaru’s Way (Hotaru no Hikari – It’s Only Little Light in My Life), which was serialized in Kiss magazine from 2004 to 2009, spanning a total of 15 volumes. Hotaru’s Way became a cultural phenomenon, celebrated for its relatable characters and heartwarming portrayal of modern romance. The series follows the life of Hotaru Amemiya, a young woman who prefers to relax at home rather than pursue romantic relationships, leading a carefree and unconventional lifestyle.

Spinoffs and Sequels

The popularity of Hotaru’s Way led to several sequels and spinoffs, further expanding the world and characters that Hiura created. In January 2014, Hiura launched Hotaru no Hikari SP, a sequel manga that continued the story of Hotaru and her unique approach to life and love. This sequel concluded in May 2017, giving fans more of what they loved about the original series. Hiura then launched another sequel manga series titled Hotaru no Hikari BABY in October 2017.

The Endearing “Himono Woman”

Hotaru’s Way introduced readers to the concept of the “himono woman,” a term used to describe women who are uninterested in romance and prefer to spend their time relaxing at home. This character archetype resonated with many readers, reflecting a shift in societal attitudes towards relationships and personal fulfillment. Hotaru’s character became an icon for those who embraced a more laid-back and independent lifestyle. The manga’s success can be attributed to its ability to capture the essence of contemporary life and relationships.

Beyond Hotaru’s Way and Saionji-san wa Kaji o Shinai, Satoru Hiura has created numerous other manga series throughout her career, showcasing her versatility and creativity as a storyteller. These works include:
