Science Saru has officially unveiled the second teaser video and the title logo for its upcoming The Ghost in the Shell television anime series, slated for a 2026 debut. The new details were revealed during a panel at Anime Expo 2025.
A New Vision for a Cyberpunk Classic
The new TV anime, officially titled THE GHOST IN THE SHELL, maintains the name of Masamune Shirow’s original manga. This adaptation aims to stay true to the original source material, a point emphasized by a producer during the Anime Expo panel. The project marks the fourth anime adaptation of the Ghost in the Shell manga series, following works by Mamoru Oshii, Kenji Kamiyama, and Kazuchika Kise, or the tenth adaptation overall if all series and films are counted separately. Manga creator Masamune Shirow himself provided a comment on the new anime, expressing his hope for it to be an enjoyable visual experience.
Key Creative Team
The core creative team for Science Saru’s The Ghost in the Shell has been revealed, bringing together experienced talent for this highly anticipated series. Mokochan, known for work on DAN DA DAN and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, is making his directorial debut with this anime. Toh Enjoe, an acclaimed sci-fi novelist and scriptwriter for works such as The Empire of Corpses and Godzilla Singular Point, is handling both the script and series composition. Character design and chief animation director duties are being undertaken by Shūhei Handa, who has previously worked on Little Witch Academia and Spriggan ONA.
Iconic Logo Design
A significant reveal alongside the second teaser was the anime’s title logo, which was designed by renowned artist Hajime Sorayama. Sorayama is celebrated for his “Sexy Robot” series and has contributed to album covers, including Aerosmith’s “Just Push Play”. The new visual featuring the logo, illustrated by Shuhei Handa, depicts the cyborg protagonist Motoko Kusanagi and the AI tank Fuchikoma, intentionally evoking the spirit of Shirow’s original manga cover sketch.
Production Status and Future Outlook
The production committee for The Ghost in the Shell TV anime includes Bandai Namco Filmworks, Kodansha, Science SARU, and Production I.G. The script for the series is reportedly almost completed, with the team currently focusing on storyboards. While early rough animation was shown at the panel, indicating a close adherence to the manga’s art style, fans are eagerly awaiting more substantial animation clips to assess how the new adaptation will compare to previous iterations.
The franchise itself has a rich history, originating from Masamune Shirow’s manga serialized from 1989 to 1991, which follows Major Motoko Kusanagi in a futuristic society where technology and consciousness are deeply intertwined. The series has spawned numerous sequels in manga form, as well as influential anime adaptations including the 1995 film, the Stand Alone Complex TV series, and the SAC_2045 Netflix original. This new Science Saru production aims to forge a new path while honoring the legacy of the cyberpunk classic.
