The upcoming TV anime adaptation of Megumi Hatakenaka’s historical fantasy novel series, “Shabake,” has released its first promotional video, revealing additional cast members, staff details, the opening theme song, and its October debut on Fuji TV’s “Noitamina” programming block. This highly anticipated anime promises a blend of mystery, supernatural elements, and historical charm set in the Edo period.

A Beloved Series Comes to Life

“Shabake” is a popular novel series with over 10 million copies in circulation. The story revolves around Ichitaro, a sickly young man who is the heir to Nagasakiya, one of the largest commercial stores in Nihonbashi. Due to his poor health, Ichitaro is unable to venture outside, but he is protected by spirits, including his friends Sasuke, an inugami (dog spirit), and Nikichi, a hakutaku (a mythical beast). One night, Ichitaro sneaks out and witnesses a murder, leading him to investigate the crime with the help of his supernatural companions.

The anime adaptation is directed by Takahiro Okawa and produced by BN Pictures, the studio known for “Aikatsu!” and “Gintama.” The series composition is handled by Toko Machida, with character designs by Akari Minagawa and music by Rei Ishizuka.

New Cast Members Announced

The latest promotional video introduces two new cast members:

  • Koji Okino as Nikichi, one of the spirits serving Ichitaro.
  • Taku Yashiro as Sasuke, the other spirit companion of Ichitaro.

Okino expressed his excitement, stating, “Ever since I was a child, I’ve thought that strange things happen because there is something other than humans… I hope you all will have fun solving the mystery with us!” Yashiro added, “I’m really happy that the world of Shabake is finally coming to life as an animation, and I’m very excited about it. I hope that many people will enjoy the drama and mystery woven by humans and monsters, centering around the young master.”

These actors join Daiki Yamashita, who voices the main character, Ichitaro.

Opening Theme Song Revealed

The opening theme song for “Shabake” is titled “Inochi no Parade” (Parade of Life) and is performed by Kujira. The promotional video offers a preview of the song, which aims to capture the essence of the story’s warmth and the bond between Ichitaro and the spirits.

Kujira shared her thoughts on the song, saying, “I think ‘Shabake’ is a story about the strength of thinking of others even when you are weak, and the kindness of living with invisible beings… I consciously created the theme song so that you could feel the air and scent of the story. I would be happy if it is a song that flows by in the silence of the night, and that breathes in sync with the story.”

Staff and Production Details

The anime boasts a talented team dedicated to bringing the world of “Shabake” to life:

  • Original Creator: Megumi Hatakenaka
  • Director: Takahiro Okawa
  • Series Composition: Toko Machida
  • Character Design: Akari Minagawa
  • Music: Rei Ishizuka
  • Animation Production: BN Pictures

Story and Themes

Set in the Edo period, “Shabake” combines historical elements with supernatural mysteries. The story follows Ichitaro, a frail young man who, despite his health issues, possesses a kind heart and the ability to see ghosts. With the help of his spirit companions, Ichitaro solves difficult and unusual cases that occur in Edo.

The series explores themes of kindness, compassion, and the strength found in unlikely friendships. It delves into the relationships between humans and the unseen world, highlighting the importance of empathy and understanding.

A Rich History of Adaptations

The “Shabake” series has a long and successful history, with numerous adaptations across various media:

  • Novels: The original novel series by Megumi Hatanaka, which began in 2001.
  • Manga: A manga adaptation illustrated by Mimori, serialized from 2017 to 2023.
  • Live-Action TV Series: Two live-action adaptations.
  • Radio Plays: Adaptations for radio broadcast.
  • Stage Plays and Musicals: Theatrical productions based on the series.
  • Picture Books: Illustrated adaptations for younger audiences.
  • ONA (Original Net Animation): A 3-minute ONA released in 2021.

This upcoming TV anime promises a fresh experience, with a new cast and production team, appealing to both long-time fans and newcomers.

Where to Watch

The “Shabake” TV anime is scheduled to premiere in October 2025 on Fuji TV’s “Noitamina” programming block, airing every Friday at 11:30 pm JST.
