Shikiji Sorakura’s manga adaptation of Mitsuru Yūki’s The Teen Exorcist (Shōnen Onmyōji) light novel series has published its final chapter. The conclusion appeared in the November issue of Kadokawa’s Young Ace magazine, released on Friday.
The news marks the end of the manga’s run, which began its serialization in Young Ace magazine in January 2023. Fans can, however, look forward to a spinoff story in the next issue of Young Ace, scheduled for release on November 4. The sixth and final compiled book volume of the manga is set to ship on December 4.
The Journey of The Teen Exorcist Manga
The manga, illustrated by Shikiji Sorakura, brought to life the popular light novel series by Mitsuru Yūki. It captivated readers with its narrative set in Japan’s Heian Period, following the adventures of Masahiro, a young royal diviner. Masahiro, despite being the grandson of the legendary Abe no Seimei, harbors a strong desire to surpass his grandfather’s formidable legacy.
Plot and Protagonist
The story centers on Masahiro’s intense training alongside his spirit companion, Mokkun, as he strives to hone his exorcism skills. A significant turning point in his journey involves detecting an ominous presence targeting the princess, thrusting him into a mission to protect the royal capital and step out of his grandfather’s shadow. This blend of historical setting, supernatural elements, and personal growth has been a key draw for the series.
Serialization and English Release
Kadokawa first published the manga’s inaugural volume in June 2023, with the fifth volume released on June 4. For international readers, Yen Press has licensed The Teen Exorcist manga for English publication, with the third volume having shipped on September 23. Yen Press describes the series as a tale where “Purge evil spirits, protect the princess… It’s all child’s play for this teenage exorcist!!”
Origins in Light Novels and Previous Adaptations
The The Teen Exorcist franchise has a rich history, originating from Mitsuru Yūki’s light novel series. Kadokawa’s Beans Bunko light novel imprint began publishing the original novels in 2001, establishing a long-standing narrative. The popularity of the light novels also led to other adaptations, including an anime series from Geneon Entertainment USA in 2006 and a musical stage play in 2007.
The conclusion of Shikiji Sorakura’s manga adaptation marks a new chapter for the franchise, even as it promises a spinoff to continue exploring its mystical world.
