What’s Awajima Hyakkei About?
Awajima Hyakkei (“One Hundred Views of Awajima”) is a manga series written and illustrated by Takako Shimura. The series is a coming-of-age omnibus that follows the lives of young girls attending a musical academy. Set in the same world as Shimura’s Sweet Blue Flowers, the story revolves around students at Awajima, a school inspired by the real-life Takarazuka Musical School, as they pursue their dreams on stage while navigating the drama and romance inherent in an all-female theater troupe. Each chapter focuses on a different girl, offering varied perspectives and experiences within the academy.
The manga was originally serialized on Ohta Publishing’s PocoPoco website from June 2011 to 2016. It then moved to the Ohta Web Comic website, where it ran from July 2016 to March 15, 2024. The chapters have been compiled into five tankōbon volumes, released between April 2015 and May 2024. The fifth and final volume was released on May 13, 2024. Awajima Hyakkei received an Award for Excellence in the manga category of the 19th Japan Media Arts Festival.
