The upcoming prequel anime film As One, based on Square Enix’s Starwing Paradox arcade game, has unveiled its theme song, “Meguriboshi” (Wandering Star), in a newly released full trailer. The song is performed by RUKI, the solo artist moniker of Ruki Shiroiwa, a member of the popular boy group JO1. Shiroiwa also takes on the role of the film’s main protagonist, Yō.

As One is slated to premiere in Japanese theaters on August 22, 2025. The movie serves as a prequel, presenting an original story set two decades prior to the events of the Starwing Paradox arcade game. The film delves into the origins and connections within the Starwing Paradox universe, promising to unveil secrets about Realide, the origins of Aerial, and the deep bond between the planets Meguriboshi and Earth.
Plot and Characters
The narrative of As One follows Yō, a high school student on Earth grappling with his parents’ disapproval of his musical aspirations and growing disconnected from his bandmates. His life takes an unexpected turn when he hears a mysterious plea for help and is enveloped in a bright light, transporting him to Meguriboshi. On this war-torn planet, robot mechanic Rako loses consciousness while dealing with space debris and mentally connects with Yō across the stars. Their fateful encounter sets in motion a series of events that intertwine their two worlds.
The film’s cast includes Ruki Shiroiwa as Yō, Haruka Shiraishi as Rako, Shunsuke Takeuchi as Vigo, Yōko Hikasa as Kizana, and Ryūhei Maruyama as Rurowa.
Production Team
The production of As One boasts a seasoned team, with Kobun Shizuno (known for several Detective Conan films) directing the movie. Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, celebrated for his work on Evangelion and Summer Wars, returns from the game to handle the character designs for the film. The scriptwriters are Shatner Nishida, Kana Matsui, and Masaya Honda, while Ippei Gyōbu serves as the mechanical designer. Honoo and Studio GOONEYS are responsible for the animation production.
