A recent panel at Japan Expo in France revealed that Moyoco Anno’s beloved Sugar Sugar Rune manga will be returning to shelves in the United States, Italy, and Taiwan starting in 2026. This announcement, made during a presentation by Studio Khara for a new anime short, marks a significant revival for the shojo series in these regions.
Udon Entertainment to Publish in the U.S.
For readers in the United States, Udon Entertainment will be responsible for publishing the Sugar Sugar Rune manga. This follows previous releases by Del Rey, which had licensed and published all eight volumes in English. Udon Entertainment had initially announced its license for the manga in 2015.
Global Availability and Series Background
The Sugar Sugar Rune manga is already available in Japan, France, and South Korea. The series, written and illustrated by Moyoco Anno, was serialized in Kodansha’s Nakayoshi magazine from 2004 to 2007. It follows the adventures of two young witches, Chocolat Meilleure and Vanilla Mieux, who are best friends and rivals competing to become queen of the Magical World by collecting human hearts. Their journey involves navigating challenges in the Human World, aided by their mentor Rockin’ Robin and familiars Blanca and Duke, while also dealing with the mysterious Pierre.
New Anime Projects Also Announced
In addition to the manga’s return, the Japan Expo panel also brought exciting news for anime fans. Studio Khara debuted a 20th-anniversary anime short titled “Sugar Sugar Rune Les deux sorcières,” which serves as a prologue to the original manga. Furthermore, it was announced that a separate, full-fledged anime project utilizing similar CG animation has been green-lit for production. The original manga inspired a 51-episode television anime adaptation that premiered in 2005.
