The Tales of Crestoria manga has reached its conclusion, marking the end of a two-year journey adapting and expanding upon the narrative of the now-defunct mobile game. The final chapter of Tales of Crestoria: Sinful Song of the Guilty was published on Sunday, leaving fans with a completed story after the game’s early closure.

From Mobile Game to Manga Adaptation

Tales of Crestoria initially launched as a mobile game for iOS and Android in July 2020. Despite high expectations, the game faced harsh criticism and was ultimately shut down in February 2022 due to the “inability to meet expectations” for a higher quality gaming experience.

However, the story didn’t end there. Recognizing the potential of the narrative, a manga adaptation was launched in December 2022 on Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket platform. The manga, titled Tales of Crestoria: Togabito no Zaika (Tales of Crestoria: Sinful Song of the Guilty), was penned by Jun Kumagai, who also worked on the game’s scenario, with art by Tsubaki Ayasugi.

Continuing the Narrative

The manga adaptation aimed to pick up where the original mobile game left off, providing a complete conclusion to the story that the game had started. It delved deeper into the world and characters of Tales of Crestoria, offering fans a chance to experience the full narrative potential of the project.

Story and Setting

Tales of Crestoria is set in a world where citizens are required to wear “vision orbs.” These orbs allow the populace to judge and condemn individuals deemed to have committed crimes based on popular vote.

The story follows Kanata, the son of a respected village leader who runs an orphanage. Kanata develops feelings for Misella, a girl under his care. One night, tragedy strikes Misella, and Kanata commits a crime to save her. In turn, Misella ends up committing a crime to protect Kanata.

The Transgressors

Exposed by their vision orbs, Kanata and Misella are branded as “transgressors” by their community, and enforcers are sent to punish them. Fleeing for their lives, they encounter Vicious, a notorious figure known as “The Great Transgressor.” Vicious presents them with a choice: “Own your sin or let it own you.”

Manga Details

The Tales of Crestoria manga ran for approximately two years, culminating in the release of its final chapter. Kodansha shipped the sixth compiled book volume on November 8.

Key People Involved

  • Original Story: Bandai Namco Entertainment
  • Scenario: Jun Kumagai
  • Art: Tsubaki Ayasugi

Where to Read

The manga was serialized in Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket, a digital manga platform.

Reception and Impact

While the Tales of Crestoria mobile game had a short lifespan, the manga adaptation provided a second chance for the story to resonate with audiences. The manga allowed fans to further explore the themes of sin, justice, and redemption that are central to the Tales of Crestoria universe.

The conclusion of the manga marks the end of the Tales of Crestoria project, but the characters and themes explored in the story are likely to remain with fans for years to come.

Other Adaptations

Before its end, Tales of Crestoria also inspired a 15-minute anime short by Kamikaze Douga, titled Tales of Crestoria: The Wake of Sin. Crunchyroll streamed the short worldwide, adapting the prologue of the game’s story and depicting Kanata and Misella’s initial journey.
