The popular anime series “The Apothecary Diaries” has officially announced the production of a new sequel, immediately following the conclusion of its second season on July 4, 2025. This continuation of Maomao’s story was revealed after the airing of Episode 24, which marked the finale of the second season (and Episode 48 overall for the series).
The announcement explicitly refers to the upcoming production as a “sequel” rather than a third television season, with early details indicating it will “take place in a new land.” A teaser video accompanying the announcement has also been released.
“The Apothecary Diaries” is based on the light novel series penned by Natsu Hyūga and illustrated by Touko Shino. The anime adaptation is a collaborative effort between TOHO animation STUDIO and OLM, with Norihiro Naganuma serving as both director and series composer. Crunchyroll currently streams the historical drama series, and it is also available on Netflix in Asia.
The story follows Maomao, a young woman with a sharp mind and extensive knowledge of medicine, who finds herself sold into service in the emperor’s sprawling rear palace. Despite her unassuming appearance, her quick wit and medical expertise catch the attention of Jinshi, a handsome palace official, leading her to become a lady-in-waiting to the Emperor’s favorite consort.
