Fans of the mystery-adventure anime “The Detective is Already Dead” (Tantei wa Mō, Shinde Iru.) can mark their calendars, as the highly anticipated second season is officially slated for a July 2026 debut. The announcement came with a new teaser visual and video, exciting viewers who have been awaiting the continuation of Kimihiko Kimizuka’s post-Siesta adventures.

The sequel was initially announced in July 2022, and this latest update provides a more concrete release window, narrowing it down to Summer 2026.

What the Teaser Video and Visual Reveal

The newly released teaser visual features Siesta, the enigmatic detective whose legacy continues to shape the narrative of the series. She is depicted with a faint smile, standing beside a monitor that reflects her face, a quiet yet powerful image that has already generated significant buzz among fans. While an exact release date within July 2026 has not yet been specified, the visual explicitly confirms the 2026 air date for the sequel.

Returning Cast and Staff for Season 2

The production committee for “The Detective is Already Dead” Season 2 has also confirmed the return of key cast and staff members, ensuring continuity for the beloved series.

Voice Cast Reprisals

  • Arata Nagai will return as the voice of Kimihiko Kimizuka, Siesta’s assistant and the series’ protagonist.
  • Saki Miyashita reprises her role as the titular detective, Siesta.
  • Ayana Taketatsu is confirmed to rejoin the cast as Nagisa Natsunagi.
  • Kanon Takao will return as Yui Saikawa.
  • Saho Shirasu will voice Charlotte Arisaka Anderson.

Production Team

The core creative team from the first season will also be returning:

  • Manabu Kurihara will once again direct the second season at Studio ENGI.
  • Deko Akao is in charge of the series scripts.
  • Yōsuke Itō will handle character design.

More cast and staff members are expected to be announced at a later date.

A Look Back at “The Detective is Already Dead”

The anime adapts the light novel series written by Nigojū and illustrated by Umibōzu, which began publication in November 2019 under Media Factory’s MF Bunko J imprint. The light novel series won the 15th MF Bunko J Light Novel Rookie of the Year award in 2019. Yen Press licenses both the light novels and manga adaptation in North America.

The first season of the anime, produced by ENGI, aired from July to September 2021, with the initial episode premiering as a one-hour special. Crunchyroll currently streams the first season and an English dub.

Premise of the Series

“The Detective is Already Dead” centers on Kimihiko Kimizuka, a high school student who, since childhood, has been a “magnet for trouble,” constantly finding himself entangled in mysterious and dangerous situations. His life took an extraordinary turn when he met Siesta, a brilliant, silver-haired detective, on a hijacked plane. He was reluctantly coerced into becoming her sidekick, and for three years, they traveled the world, solving numerous cases and confronting underworld organizations.

The series, however, begins a year after Siesta’s untimely death, with Kimihiko attempting to return to a normal life. Yet, the echoes of his past with Siesta, and the mysterious circumstances surrounding her, continue to draw him into new mysteries, often involving other individuals connected to Siesta’s legacy, such as Nagisa Natsunagi. The narrative often employs flashbacks to explore Kimihiko and Siesta’s cases, intertwining past adventures with present-day developments. The story blends elements of mystery, adventure, and romantic comedy.

Anticipation for New Mysteries

With the second season confirmed for July 2026, fans eagerly await to see how Kimihiko will navigate new cases and confront the lingering mysteries surrounding Siesta and the secret organizations they once fought. The return of the original cast and staff promises a faithful continuation of the beloved story.
