Hinako Seta’s beloved supernatural comedy manga series, Re-Kan!, is officially set to conclude its serialization on August 7, 2025. The final chapter will appear in Houbunsha’s Manga Time magazine, gracing the front cover and featuring a color opening page. This marks the culmination of a heartwarming narrative that has entertained readers for over a decade, following the daily life of a high school girl with a unique ability to see and interact with ghosts.

A Decade of Sixth Sense and Supernatural Shenanigans

Re-Kan! began its journey as a one-shot story in Houbunsha’s Manga Time Jumbo magazine in December 2009, before officially starting its regular serialization in February 2010. The manga quickly garnered a loyal following due to its charming blend of comedy and supernatural elements. The central premise revolves around Hibiki Amami, an ordinary high school student who possesses a “sixth sense,” enabling her to perceive and communicate with spirits and other otherworldly entities, as well as converse with animals.

The series has primarily focused on Hibiki’s everyday life, showcasing her interactions with both her human friends and the array of benevolent, and sometimes mischievous, ghosts that inhabit her world. A significant part of the humor and heart of Re-Kan! stems from the contrast between Hibiki’s calm acceptance of the supernatural and the reactions of her friends, particularly Narumi Inoue, who is often terrified by the ghostly occurrences surrounding Hibiki. Despite its supernatural premise, the manga has been praised for its lighthearted tone and emphasis on warmth and empathy, portraying Hibiki’s psychic abilities not as a burden, but as an extension of her kind nature.

Serialization Journey and Milestones

Throughout its serialization, Re-Kan! saw a change in its publication home. Initially serialized in Manga Time Jumbo, the series moved to Manga Time in March 2018 when Manga Time Jumbo ceased publication. Over its long run, Hinako Seta has compiled the chapters into 15 tankōbon (collected) volumes, with the most recent volume released in January 2025.

The manga’s popularity also led to an anime adaptation. A 13-episode television anime series, produced by Pierrot+, aired in Japan from April to June 2015. Crunchyroll streamed the series as it aired, and Sentai Filmworks licensed the anime for North America, releasing it on DVD and Blu-ray Disc. A stage play adaptation of Re-Kan! also ran in November 2015, further demonstrating the series’ reach and appeal.

The Legacy of Re-Kan!

The conclusion of Re-Kan! marks the end of a significant chapter for Hinako Seta and her dedicated readership. The series has carved out a unique niche within the supernatural comedy genre by presenting its ghostly encounters with a wholesome and often humorous lens, focusing on friendship, acceptance, and the quirks of everyday life when spirits are involved. Its consistent serialization for over a decade, coupled with its anime and stage play adaptations, underscores its enduring popularity and the affectionate place it holds in the hearts of its fans. While the manga is drawing to a close, its legacy as a charming and uplifting tale of a girl who sees beyond the ordinary is set to remain.
