The upcoming original anime film The Last Blossom, also known as Housenka in Japan, has revealed a teaser trailer, key visuals, and the main voice cast. Set to premiere in Japan in Fall 2025, this poignant film is directed by Baku Kinoshita and written by Kazuya Konomoto, the creative duo behind the critically acclaimed anime series ODDTAXI. The film has also been selected for the Feature Film Competition at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2025, marking a significant milestone for the production.

A Heartbreaking Tale Blossoms to Life

The Last Blossom tells the story of Akutsu, an elderly inmate serving a life sentence, who is nearing death in his solitary cell. His life takes an unexpected turn when a talking Housenka flower appears and remarks, “What a rotten life you had.” This encounter prompts Akutsu to reflect on his past, leading viewers through a journey of regret, redemption, and the mysteries of life. The narrative explores Akutsu’s younger days in the summer of 1986, where he lives with Nana and her son Kensuke in a humble apartment filled with Housenka flowers. The film weaves together the tale of a dying yakuza’s attempt at a comeback and his family’s story, as told by the unique perspective of a flower blooming in a prison.

Creative Minds Behind The Last Blossom

The film boasts a talented creative team. Baku Kinoshita, known for directing ODDTAXI, takes on both the director and character designer roles. Kazuya Konomoto, the writer behind ODDTAXI, serves as the screenwriter for The Last Blossom. The film is produced by CLAP, an animation studio recognized for works such as Pompo: The Cinéphile and The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes. Michinoku-toge is credited as the concept artist, contributing to the film’s visual style. The music for The Last Blossom is composed by the three-piece Japanese pop-rock band cero, adding another layer of depth to the film’s emotional landscape.

Stellar Voice Cast Announced

The cast of The Last Blossom includes:

  • Kaoru Kobayashi as the present-day Akutsu
  • Junki Tozuka as the past Akutsu. This marks Tozuka’s first voice acting role.
  • Hikari Mitsushima as the present-day Nana Nagata
  • Yoshiko Miyazaki as the past Nana Nagata
  • Pierre Taki as the voice of Housenka, the talking balsam flower

Themes of Regret and Redemption

The Last Blossom delves into themes of regret and redemption through the eyes of its protagonist, Akutsu. As an elderly inmate reflecting on his life, Akutsu is confronted with the choices he made and the path he took. The presence of the talking Housenka flower serves as a catalyst for his introspection, prompting him to confront his past and seek a sense of closure before his time runs out.

The film also explores the theme of family, particularly the relationship between Akutsu, Nana, and her son Kensuke. Through flashbacks to Akutsu’s younger days, viewers gain insight into the dynamics of this unconventional family and the challenges they faced. The Housenka flowers, which fill their humble apartment, symbolize the fragility and beauty of life, serving as a reminder of the importance of cherishing the moments we have with loved ones.

Poignant Visuals and Music

The teaser trailer and key visuals for The Last Blossom offer a glimpse into the film’s aesthetic. The visuals are minimalistic yet impactful, with a focus on the contrast between the bleakness of Akutsu’s prison cell and the vibrant beauty of the Housenka flowers. The use of light and shadow creates a sense of melancholy and introspection, reflecting the film’s themes of regret and redemption.

The music composed by cero promises to further enhance the film’s emotional impact. Known for their blend of pop, rock, and experimental sounds, cero’s music is expected to add depth and nuance to the film’s narrative. The combination of poignant visuals and evocative music is poised to create a powerful and unforgettable viewing experience.

Annecy International Animation Film Festival Selection

The Last Blossom‘s selection for the Feature Film Competition at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2025 is a testament to the film’s quality and potential. The Annecy Festival is one of the most prestigious animation festivals in the world, showcasing the best in animated films from around the globe. Being selected for the Feature Film Competition is a significant achievement and a recognition of the talent and dedication of the film’s creative team.

A Film to Anticipate

The Last Blossom promises to be a thought-provoking and emotionally resonant film that explores universal themes of regret, redemption, and the importance of human connection. With its talented creative team, stellar voice cast, and poignant visuals and music, this anime film is one to watch out for in Fall 2025.
