New promotional clips for The Obsessed Anime Film, known in Japan as Toritsukare Otoko, are providing audiences with further glimpses into its whimsical world ahead of its November 7 theatrical release. While recent previews have focused on the film’s musical numbers, they also underscore the significant role of Cielo, the protagonist Giuseppe’s astute mouse companion and the film’s narrator.
A Glimpse into The Obsessed Narrative
Based on Shinji Ishii’s 2001 novel, Toritsukare Otoko, the musical anime film follows Giuseppe, a man prone to intense, fleeting obsessions. His life takes a turn when he becomes fixated not on an object or hobby, but on a person: Pechka, a quiet balloon seller. As Giuseppe endeavors to connect with Pechka and bring joy into her melancholic world, he enlists the unique assistance of his mouse friend, Cielo. The film has already garnered attention with its screening at the Tokyo International Film Festival.
Cielo: Giuseppe’s Confidant and Narrator
Cielo is not merely a pet but a central figure in The Obsessed Anime Film. Described as Giuseppe’s “mouse friend,” Cielo serves as the narrator, guiding the audience through Giuseppe’s peculiar journey and offering insights into his shifting obsessions and his efforts to aid Pechka. Hayato Kakizawa lends his voice to the character of Cielo, highlighting the mouse’s importance within the ensemble cast. The narrative indicates that Giuseppe relies on Cielo’s aid, utilizing his past obsessions to slowly help Pechka, solidifying Cielo’s pivotal position in the unfolding romance and self-discovery.
Musical Showcases and Character Dynamics
Recently unveiled clips have primarily showcased the film’s musical elements, a core aspect of the adaptation. One notable clip featured “Giuseppe’s Theme,” an upbeat song performed by Masaya Sano, who voices Giuseppe. Another preview highlighted “Fanfare ~Koi ni Ukarete~,” an in-movie version of the theme song “Fanfare,” sung by Masaya Sano and Moka Kamishiraishi (who voices Pechka). While these clips focus on the vocal performances of the main human characters, they contextually underscore the world in which Cielo operates and his integral role in Giuseppe’s pursuits. The visual storytelling within these clips further builds anticipation for the dynamic between Giuseppe, Pechka, and, by extension, Cielo.
