Titan Manga has announced the acquisition of the license to publish J-ta Yamada’s “Eko Eko Azarak Reborn” manga in English. Fans of supernatural horror can anticipate the first volume’s release both physically and digitally on April 28, 2026.

A Remake of a Horror Classic

“Eko Eko Azarak Reborn” is a remake of the original “Eko Eko Azarak” manga by the late Shinichi Koga. Koga’s original series ran from September 1, 1975, to March 1979 in Akita Shoten’s Weekly Shōnen Champion magazine, culminating in 19 collected volumes. Yamada’s remake was serialized in Akita Shoten’s Champion Red magazine from March 19, 2020, to March 17, 2023, and compiled into five tankobon volumes.

Synopsis

Titan Manga describes the story as follows:

“Eko Eko Azarak Reborn brings the terrifying world of witchcraft, demons, and dark magic back to life in this chilling remake of the 1975-79 classic. Misa Kuroi, a powerful witch awakened by humanity’s darkest desires, is summoned by a mysterious stranger and sent on a harrowing journey into Hell. Facing both her dark past and Lucifer himself, Misa must confront unimaginable horrors and unlock her true power to survive.”

About the Creators

Shinichi Koga

Shinichi Koga was the original creator of the “Eko Eko Azarak” manga. His series became a popular horror manga and has been adapted into several forms of media, with six live-action films, two live-action television dramas, and an original video animation. Koga sadly passed away in March 2018.

J-ta Yamada

J-ta Yamada is the artist behind the “Eko Eko Azarak Reborn” remake. Yamada is also known for adapting Nobuaki Kanazawa’s “King’s Game” mobile phone novel into a manga titled “King’s Game: Origin.” Additionally, Yamada worked with Shinichi Okada on “Inō Maze” (Supernatural Power Maze). Yamada’s “Asatte no Hōkō” manga inspired the 2006 anime “Living for the Day After Tomorrow”.

A Legacy of Horror

Koga’s original “Eko Eko Azarak” manga has left a significant mark on Japanese horror. The series follows Misa Kuroi, a young witch who uses black magic to deliver justice. The original manga spawned a multimedia franchise.

Adaptations

The original “Eko Eko Azarak” manga has been adapted into various forms, including:

  • Live-Action Films: Six films were released between 1995 and 2006.
    • Eko Eko Azarak – Wizard of Darkness- (1995)
    • Eko Eko Azarak II – Birth of the Wizard- (1996)
    • Eko Eko Azarak III – Misa The Dark Angel- (1998)
    • Eko Eko Azarak R-page (2006)
    • Eko Eko Azarak B-page (2006)
  • Television Dramas: Two television series aired in 1997 and 2004.
  • Original Video Animation (OVA): A two-episode OVA series was released in 2007.
  • Video Games: The manga also inspired two video games.

The original films and TV series are available on streaming platforms like Shudder and Amazon Prime Video in select territories.

Where to Pre-order

The English version of “Eko Eko Azarak Reborn” Volume 1 is available for pre-order from Forbidden Planet in the U.K.

Reception

Early reviews from Japanese readers of “Eko Eko Azarak Reborn” have been generally positive. Some appreciate the modern aesthetic and updated elements, such as the inclusion of social media in the storyline, while maintaining the core themes of black magic, demons, and witches. While some older fans may find the art style less frightening, new readers are likely to find the story accessible and engaging.

With its blend of classic horror themes and modern sensibilities, “Eko Eko Azarak Reborn” is poised to capture the attention of both longtime fans and new readers. The release in English by Titan Manga will introduce this chilling tale to a broader audience eager for supernatural thrills.
