Shinpei Funatsu, known for his work as the artist of the parody manga Todai Revengers, is set to launch a brand-new series titled Heisei Tensei (Heisei Reincarnation) on October 16. The announcement was made by Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket service via its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday, generating anticipation among fans for Funatsu’s next project.
From University Parody to New Beginnings: Shinpei Funatsu’s Latest Work
Shinpei Funatsu gained recognition for Todai Revengers, a comedic spin-off of Ken Wakui’s popular Tokyo Revengers manga. Todai Revengers reimagined the main character as a hapless university student, offering an over-the-top parody that ran in Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket app and website from November 2021 to May 2023, concluding with its sixth volume. Seven Seas Entertainment has been publishing the parody manga in English, with the third and final omnibus volume released on July 22.
“Heisei Tensei” Set to Debut on Magazine Pocket
Funatsu’s new manga, Heisei Tensei, will also be published on Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket platform, signaling a continued collaboration with the digital service. While specific plot details for Heisei Tensei are yet to be fully revealed, the title “Heisei Reincarnation” suggests a potential thematic connection to the Heisei era (1989-2019) of Japanese history, possibly incorporating elements of time travel or revisiting past events, a concept familiar to fans of his previous work’s inspiration.
The launch of Heisei Tensei on October 16 marks an exciting new chapter for Shinpei Funatsu as he moves from a beloved parody series to an original creation. Fans eagerly await to see the creative direction and unique storytelling style he will bring to his latest manga.
