Creator Iro Aida’s Health Prompts One-Issue Break for Popular Series
The widely acclaimed “Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun” (Jibaku Shōnen Hanako-kun) manga, penned by the creative duo Iro Aida, will be taking a temporary break from serialization due to one of the authors’ sudden illness. The announcement, made via the official X/Twitter account for Square Enix’s G Fantasy magazine, confirms that the manga will not feature a new chapter in the upcoming August issue of the publication.
Details of the Hiatus and Resumption
Fans eagerly awaiting new installments of “Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun” will find that the August issue of G Fantasy, set to be released on July 18, will instead feature a reprint of an older chapter. This measure allows for the author, Iro Aida, to recover. The series is scheduled to resume its regular serialization in the September issue of the magazine, which will be available to readers on August 18. The specific nature of the sudden illness has not been disclosed, but the quick return date suggests it is a short-term health matter.
The Impact of Creator Health on Manga Production
This temporary halt in “Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun’s” publication highlights a recurring challenge within the manga industry: the demanding schedules and intense pressure on creators, often leading to health issues. Manga artists frequently face rigorous weekly or monthly deadlines, which can result in significant stress and physical strain. Instances of manga artists taking breaks due to illness or other health concerns are not uncommon across the industry.
A Look at “Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun”
“Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun” has garnered a significant following since its launch in Square Enix’s G Fantasy magazine in 2014. The supernatural comedy series delves into the mysterious occurrences at Kamome Academy, centering on Nene Yashiro’s encounter with Hanako-san, one of the school’s Seven Mysteries. The manga has been compiled into 24 tankōbon volumes as of June 2025, with the 25th volume slated for release in October. Yen Press handles the English-language release of the manga in North America.
The manga also inspired a popular television anime adaptation, which first premiered in Japan in January 2020. The anime’s second season began in January, with its second part premiering in July. A spin-off manga, “After-School Hanako-kun” (Hōkago Shōnen Hanako-kun), also ran from 2018 to 2021. The temporary suspension of the main “Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun” manga aims to ensure the continued well-being of its creator, allowing them to return to the series in full health.
