The 38th Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) has announced a compelling selection for its Animation category, featuring highly anticipated screenings such as the 4K remaster of Mamoru Oshii and Yoshitaka Amano’s classic Angel’s Egg, alongside the Asian premiere of Shōji Kawamori’s Labyrinth, the musical anime The Obsessed, and the international premiere of the omnibus film Edge of Time. The festival is set to run from October 27 to November 5, 2025, promising a rich showcase of both historical and contemporary animated works.

A Celebration of Animation at the 38th Tokyo International Film Festival

TIFF, recognized as Japan’s only film festival accredited by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF), continues its tradition of bringing a global array of cinematic excellence to Tokyo. The festival, predominantly staged in the stylish Hibiya–Yurakucho–Marunouchi–Ginza district, serves as a vital platform for filmmakers and fans alike.

The Resurgence of a Classic: Angel’s Egg 4K Remaster

One of the standout announcements is the Japanese premiere of the 4K HDR remaster of the 1985 original video animation (OVA), Angel’s Egg (Tenshi no Tamago). This visually stunning allegorical fantasy, a collaborative masterpiece by director Mamoru Oshii (known for Ghost in the Shell) and artist Yoshitaka Amano (famed for the Final Fantasy series), is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2025. The 4K restoration was meticulously supervised by director Oshii himself, scanning the original 35mm film and reconstructing the original mono audio into 5.1-channel surround and Dolby Atmos formats. The restored version has already garnered international attention, having been selected for the Classics section of the 78th Cannes Film Festival in May 2025, where it held its world premiere screening.

Premieres and Unique Offerings

The festival’s animation lineup also highlights several significant premieres:

  • Labyrinth (Meikyū no Shiori): Making its Asian premiere, this original animation film is directed by the acclaimed Shōji Kawamori, known for his work on the Macross franchise. Labyrinth marks Kawamori’s first feature-length animated film not based on an existing franchise and is slated to open in Japan on January 1. The story follows a high school girl named Shiori Maezawa, who finds herself in a deserted parallel world of Yokohama after her smartphone breaks.
  • The Obsessed (Toritsukare Otoko): This musical anime film is an adaptation of Shinji Ishii’s novel and will also be part of the TIFF animation showcase.
  • Edge of Time: An international premiere, this multinational omnibus film promises a diverse collection of animated storytelling.

Expanding the Animation Horizon

Beyond these prominent titles, the 38th Tokyo International Film Festival’s animation section will also feature other notable films, further emphasizing the festival’s broad appeal. Among them is a screening of Momotaro, Sacred Sailors (Momotaro – Umi no Shinpei), Japan’s first-ever feature-length animated film, originally released in 1945. International works such as the French film Allah is Not Obliged and the Spanish film Decorado are also part of the diverse selection, highlighting TIFF’s commitment to showcasing animation from around the globe.

This diverse and high-profile animation lineup underscores TIFF’s role as a major cultural event, offering a blend of historical reverence and contemporary innovation to film enthusiasts worldwide.
