Understanding the Story of “The Moon on a Rainy Night”
The manga, which has gained significant traction, tells the story of Saki Kindaichi, a high school student who has a chance encounter on a rainy night with Kanon Oikawa, a girl her age who is hard of hearing. Despite Kanon’s initial aloofness due to her disability, Saki persistently reaches out, leading to a blossoming friendship and, for Saki, developing romantic feelings. The narrative delves into themes of communication, understanding, and the unseen struggles people carry.
Kuzushiro, the original manga author, shared insights into the themes of the story, stating that “Everyone carries worries and struggles that can’t be seen with the eye.” They emphasized the challenges of truly understanding or sharing feelings, highlighting the essential role of communication, and noted that while the protagonists are high school girls, the issues they face are universally relatable.
