Udon Entertainment has revealed two significant new artbook releases: Hidetaka Tenjin’s Artistry Of Gundam and Marvel vs. Capcom: Ultimate Complete Works. The announcements were made during the company’s San Diego Comic-Con International panel on Saturday. These new titles will appeal to fans of iconic mecha design and classic fighting games, respectively.
Hidetaka Tenjin’s Artistry Of Gundam
The Artistry Of Gundam will showcase the extensive work of legendary illustrator Hidetaka Tenjin, renowned for his contributions to the Gundam franchise. Tenjin is a prominent Japanese mecha anime artist and science fiction illustrator, known for his detailed mechanical designs for various model kits, including Hasegawa’s Macross line and Bandai Spirits’ Gundam and Star Wars lines. His work on Gundam includes Gunpla box art, Blu-ray anime covers, magazine illustrations, and video game artwork.
The artbook will be available in two distinct editions:
- Standard Hardcover Edition: This version will measure 8.25″x11.25″ and will be sold in bookstores for US$49.99.
- Oversized “U.C. Edition”: Geared towards collectors, this larger edition will measure 10″x13.6″ and will be exclusively available for pre-order on Udon Entertainment’s website, priced at US$89.99.
Tenjin has been a significant figure in the mecha art world for decades, with his realistic art style influenced by masters like Yoshiyuki Takani and Noriyoshi Ohrai. His work has been featured in various exhibitions, including “BoxArt by TENJIN ~The World of Hidetaka Tenjin’s Box Art~” at Gundam Base Tokyo. This upcoming publication marks a significant international release for Tenjin, whose previous collaborations with Udon include projects attempted as far back as 2012.
Marvel vs. Capcom: Ultimate Complete Works
Udon Entertainment also confirmed the release of Marvel vs. Capcom: Ultimate Complete Works. While specific details about this “Ultimate” version from the recent announcement are still emerging, Udon previously released Marvel vs. Capcom: Official Complete Works in 2012. This earlier artbook was a comprehensive collection covering nearly 20 years of art from Marvel and Capcom’s video game collaborations, from 1993’s The Punisher arcade game up to Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3.
The 2012 Official Complete Works featured promotional artwork, character drawings, rare and never-before-seen art, sketches, and bonus material. It included contributions from renowned artists such as Akiman, Bengus, Shinkiro, Joe Madureira, and Adi Granov, along with new illustrations exclusive to the book by artists like Joe Ng, Long Vo, Chamba, Adam Warren, and Takeshi Miyazawa. This original compilation was notable as it was the first time such material was collected in one place, with no Japanese counterpart existing. The previous Marvel vs. Capcom: Official Complete Works debuted at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2012 with a limited hardcover edition and saw a standard softcover release in November 2012. The upcoming Ultimate Complete Works is expected to build upon this legacy, offering an even more extensive collection for fans of the crossover fighting series.
