The Narrative Journey of “Whoever Steals This Book”
“Whoever Steals This Book” tells the story of high school student Mifuyu Mikura, who, despite her family’s long history of book collecting, has no love for literature. Her great-grandfather established the renowned Mikura Hall, a library cherished by the local townsfolk. However, an incident involving a stolen book triggers an ancient curse, transforming the entire town according to various stories.
Mifuyu is then forced to confront her aversion to books as she must catch the thief to restore her town to normal. She embarks on an adventure through different story worlds with the help of Mashiro, a mysterious girl who is a passionate book lover and possesses the ability to transform into a white dog.
Key Creative Team and Cast
The anime film is produced by Kagokan and directed by Daisei Fukuoka. Yasuhiro Nakanishi is responsible for the screenplay, while Keiko Kurosawa handles character designs and serves as the chief animation director. Michiru Ōshima composed the music for the film.
The main cast features Rin Kataoka making her voice acting debut as Mifuyu Mikura, with Sora Tamaki also debuting as Mashiro. Experienced voice actors Nao Toyama, Junichi Suwabe, Shizuka Ito, Shinba Tsuchiya, and Romi Park fill out other key roles.
From Novel to Screen: A Brief History
Nowaki Fukamidori’s original novel was first published by Kadokawa Shoten in October 2020. A paperback edition followed in June 2023. The novel also inspired a manga adaptation illustrated by Kakeru Sora, which was serialized from December 2021 to March 2023. Yen Press has licensed both the novel and manga adaptations in English.
The anime film adaptation was initially announced with a 2026 release window but was later moved up to December 26, 2025. This earlier release date has heightened anticipation for fans eager to see the fantastical mystery unfold on the big screen.
