A new trailer for the highly anticipated Witch Watch anime has been released, revealing the ending theme song, “Mahou wa Spice” (“Magic is Spice”), performed by the four-piece rock band Aooo. The anime, based on the manga by Kenta Shinohara (known for SKET Dance), is set to premiere on April 6, 2025, and will be simulcast on Crunchyroll.

“Mahou wa Spice” Adds Flavor to Witch Watch

The second promotional video offers a sneak peek at the magical comedy anime’s enchanting world, along with a preview of Aooo’s upbeat ending theme. “Mahou wa Spice” promises to be a delightful addition to the series, complementing the already captivating opening theme song, “Watch Me!”, performed by YOASOBI. The ending theme announcement arrived alongside news that GKIDS will screen the first three episodes in North American theaters between March 16-18.

Production Team & Cast

Witch Watch is directed by Hiroshi Ikehata (TONIKAWA: Over The Moon For You, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood) at Bibury Animation Studios, with Masao Kawase as assistant director. Deko Akao (The Case Study of Vanitas) handles the series composition, while Haruko Iizuka (Horimiya) is in charge of character designs. Yukari Hashimoto (A Sign of Affection) composes the music.

The anime stars:

  • Rina Kawaguchi as Nico Wakatsuki
  • Ryota Suzuki as Morihito Otogi
  • Kohei Amasaki as Kanshi Kazamatsuri
  • Kaito Ishikawa as Keigo Magami
  • Tomori Kusunoki as Nemu Miyao

Storyline

Crunchyroll describes the story: Morihito Otogi, a high school student from a lineage of ogres, enjoys a peaceful life until his childhood friend, Nico, a witch-in-training, moves in with him. Nico chooses Morihito to be her familiar.

MyAnimeList provides a more detailed synopsis: Nico Wakatsuki has finished her six years of witch training and is moving back to town by herself. As a new witch, she must choose a familiar to accompany her. Unlike other witches, she wishes to pick a non-animal familiar, and sees her childhood friend Morihito “Moi” Otogi—who happens to be an ogre—as the perfect companion. Morihito is vehemently opposed to being her servant but reluctantly accepts his fate after learning that a curse would turn him into a strange cow-tiger hybrid were he to disobey a witch’s order. Due to Morihito’s father leaving for a business trip and Nico’s mother remaining behind in the Witches’ Holy Land, the two teens find themselves living together. While Nico is ecstatic to be living with her crush, Morihito finds that her magical antics and overall clumsiness create more problems than solutions. With a prophesied disaster to befall Nico within the year, Morihito must do everything he can to protect her as her bodyguard while also upholding his duties as her familiar.
