Storyline of the New Panty & Stocking Anime
Kadokawa describes the story as follows: In Daten City, a realm between heaven and hell, sinister spirits known as “Ghosts” prowl the streets, feeding on human desires and resentment. In the darkest moments, two figures emerge to obliterate these vengeful beings with a divine light beyond human understanding. Their names? Panty & Stocking! These fallen angel sisters have been tasked with purging the darkness engulfing the earth. But who are they, really? Are they truly messengers of God… or agents of the Devil?
Daten City
The series is set in Daten City, a location deliberately named as a pun, potentially referencing either the English word “date” or the Japanese word “datenshi” (堕天使), meaning “fallen angel.”
Production Studio
The new anime is produced by Studio Trigger, known for works like Kill la Kill, Promare, and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. Trigger acquired the rights to the Panty & Stocking IP from Gainax in 2022. Hiroyuki Imaishi, the director of the original anime, is returning to direct the new series at Trigger.
Panty & Stocking’s Unique Style
The original Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt anime, which aired in 2010, gained a cult following for its bold humor, unique animation style, and unconventional storyline. The series follows two angels, Panty and Stocking, who are kicked out of Heaven and tasked with fighting ghosts in Daten City to earn their way back. The animation style of the original series was heavily influenced by American cartoons.
