A new original net animation (ONA) adaptation of Tsukasa Hojo’s classic manga, Cat’s Eye, is set to premiere on Disney+ in September 2025. The announcement includes a teaser trailer, key visuals, the main cast, and the staff, marking a completely new anime adaptation of the series that was popular in the 1980s. This reimagining comes 40 years after the original anime concluded in 1985, promising a modern take on the beloved story of the Kisugi sisters.

A Modern Twist on a Classic: The New Cat’s Eye Anime

The new Cat’s Eye anime promises updated heist tactics and action sequences tailored for modern audiences. The series will be set against a visually stunning Tokyo backdrop, featuring landmarks like the Tokyo Skytree, adding a contemporary feel to the classic story.

Story of the Cat’s Eye

The original Cat’s Eye manga, serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump from 1981 to 1985, tells the story of the three Kisugi sisters: Hitomi, Rui, and Ai. During the day, they run a café called “Cat’s Eye,” but by night, they are a trio of formidable art thieves. Their mission is to collect all the works belonging to their missing father, a renowned artist named Michael Heinz, hoping these pieces will provide clues to his whereabouts. Hitomi has a relationship with Toshio Utsumi, a police inspector who is determined to catch “Cat’s Eye” but is unaware of Hitomi’s double life.

The Cast and Staff Behind the New Anime

The new Cat’s Eye anime features a fresh voice cast, bringing a new dynamic to the characters:

  • Hitomi Kisugi: Voiced by Mikako Komatsu.
  • Rui Kisugi: Voiced by Ami Koshimizu.
  • Ai Kisugi: Voiced by Yumiri Hanamori.
  • Toshio Utsumi: Voiced by Takuya Sato.

The anime is being produced by Liden Films, with a talented team of staff members:

  • Director: Yoshifumi Sueda (High School DxD Hero, Z/X Code reunion).
  • Scriptwriter: Hayashi Mori (Code Black).
  • Character Designer & Chief Animation Director: Yosuke Yabumoto (The Legendary Hero is Dead!, Duel Masters VS).
  • Music Composer: Yuki Hayashi (Haikyu!!, My Hero Academia).

Ado to Cover the Theme Song

Adding to the excitement, singer Ado will perform a cover of Anri’s iconic “Cat’s Eye” opening theme song from the 1983 series, with arrangement by Yuki Hayashi.

What to Expect From the New Anime

The new Cat’s Eye anime is expected to introduce updated heist tactics and action sequences that cater to modern audiences. It will also feature dynamic character interactions, including the thrilling romance between Hitomi and Detective Toshio Utsumi. The series aims to capture the essence of the original manga while offering a fresh and engaging experience for both longtime fans and new viewers.

Creator’s Comment

Tsukasa Hojo, the original creator of Cat’s Eye, expressed his surprise and gratitude upon hearing about the new anime adaptation: “I was surprised to hear that Cat’s Eye is being animated again! I am truly grateful to all the fans who have supported it for so many years.”

The Legacy of Cat’s Eye

Cat’s Eye has a rich history, starting as a manga series in 1981 and inspiring a popular anime series that aired from 1983 to 1985. The series has also had live-action adaptations, including a TV movie in 1988, a theatrical film in 1997, and a French TV series in 2024. In 2023, the Kisugi sisters appeared in the animated film City Hunter The Movie: Angel Dust, with the original voice actresses reprising their roles. A CGI-based crossover anime with Lupin III, titled Lupin the 3rd vs. Cat’s Eye, premiered on Amazon Prime Video in 2023, celebrating the 50th anniversary of Lupin III and the 40th anniversary of Cat’s Eye.
