Get ready to rediscover a classic! The highly anticipated remake of Gosho Aoyama’s Yaiba, titled Yaiba: Samurai Legend (真・侍伝YAIBA, Shin Samurai-den Yaiba), is set to premiere in April 2025, and an official English-subtitled trailer has just been released by Viz Media. Here’s a breakdown of everything you need to know about this exciting new adaptation.

What is Yaiba: Samurai Legend?

Yaiba (stylized as Y∀IBA) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Gosho Aoyama, the creator of Detective Conan (Case Closed). It was serialized in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shōnen Sunday from September 1988 to December 1993, and compiled into 24 tankōbon volumes. Yaiba won the 38th Shogakukan Manga Award for the shōnen category in 1993. The manga has also been licensed for English release in North America by Viz Media, with the first volume scheduled for release in July 2025.

The story follows Yaiba Kurogane, a young samurai raised in the forest who returns to Japan and becomes entangled in a battle against evil. He encounters a rival swordsman, Takeshi Onimaru, and their clashes unleash ancient powers, leading Yaiba on a quest to defeat a demon lord and save the world.

A Second Chance for a Beloved Series

Yaiba: Samurai Legend is not the first anime adaptation of the manga. A 52-episode anime television series, titled Kenyū Densetsu Yaiba, aired on TV Tokyo and Television Hokkaido from April 1993 to April 1994. However, this new adaptation, produced by Wit Studio, promises a fresh take on the story. The new anime is the first adaptation in 31 years, since the original series.

Where and When Can You Watch It?

  • Premiere Date: April 5, 2025
  • Japanese Broadcast: Saturdays at 5:30 p.m. on YTV, NTV, and their affiliates throughout Japan, as part of the “Gōshō Aoyama Hour” block before Detective Conan.

When Yaiba accompanies Sayaka to school, he encounters Takeshi Onimaru, a kendo expert. Their rivalry ignites, awakening two ancient powers: the Fujinken (Wind God’s Sword) and the Raijinken (Thunder God’s Sword). These supernatural blades have shaped the world since ancient times, and their reawakening sets the stage for an epic battle.

Yaiba’s journey is one of self-discovery as he strives to become a true samurai. Along the way, he meets people who encourage, train, and inspire him. Despite his incredible swordsmanship, he retains a childlike innocence and a deep kindness towards his friends. His impulsiveness can sometimes lead to trouble, but his friends are always there to help him navigate challenging situations.

Key Themes and Influences

Yaiba is a classic battle shonen manga with action, comedy, and elements of Japanese mythology and history. Key themes include:

Crossover with Detective Conan

To celebrate the New Anime, there’s a special crossover between Yaiba and Detective Conan. The protagonists of both series, both voiced by Minami Takayama, will interact in special videos. In one clip, Yaiba declares, “I look like a samurai!
