Story Premise
The Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity tells the story of Rintaro Tsumugi, a second-year student at Chidori High, a school known for accepting students with low grades and a less-than-stellar reputation. Rintaro, despite his intimidating appearance, has a kind heart and helps out at his family’s patisserie. One day, he meets Kaoruko Waguri, a student from the prestigious Kikyo Private Academy for Girls, where wealthy and high-class families send their daughters. The two quickly connect, but their budding friendship faces a significant obstacle: Kaoruko is a student at Kikyo, a fact that complicates their relationship due to the long-standing rivalry between the two schools. The story follows Rintaro and Kaoruko as they navigate their feelings for each other and overcome the challenges posed by their different social backgrounds and the expectations of their respective schools.

The Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity manga, written and illustrated by Saka Mikami, began serialization on Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket website and app in October 2021. As of January 2025, the series has been collected into 15 tankobon volumes. Kodansha USA Publishing is releasing the manga in English.
Popularity and Recognition
The manga has gained significant popularity, with over 3 million copies in circulation as of September 2024. It was nominated for the 2022 Next Manga Awards and the Tsutaya Comic Awards and has received recommendations from bookstore employees.
