- Big X: A Piece of Anime History
TMS Entertainment, the renowned animation studio behind iconic anime series such as “Detective Conan” and “Lupin III”, is celebrating its 60th anniversary by sharing some of its classic works with fans. Among these is “Big X”, TMS Entertainment’s first-ever anime production. The studio has announced the North American premiere of “Big X” Episode 11 on its official YouTube channel.
What is Big X?
“Big X” is a historical science-fiction anime series created by the legendary Osamu Tezuka, the mastermind behind “Astro Boy.” Originally released in Japan in August 1964, the anime has long been considered a “lost” series, with only a few episodes surviving.
The story revolves around Dr. Asagumo, who is invited to Nazi Germany during World War II to research a new weapon called “Big X.” Concerned about the weapon’s potential impact, Dr. Asagumo sabotages the research and implants a card containing the secret of Big X into his son, Shigeru. Years later, an organization with ties to the Nazis steals the card and completes the Big X project, which turns out to be a drug that can infinitely expand the human body. Shigeru’s son, Akira, takes on the challenge of stopping the Nazi Alliance and their plans for world domination.
The Lost Episodes
For many years, “Big X” was considered a lost anime, with only a handful of episodes known to exist. According to reports, only episodes 1, 11-12, 14, and 40-59 have survived. TMS Entertainment’s decision to stream the digitally cleaned and remastered version of Episode 1 and now Episode 11 is a significant event for anime fans and historians alike, as it allows them to rediscover a piece of anime history.
